HBA History
More...HBA, together with our partner organisation, Herts Schools Badminton Association (HSBA), promote the game of badminton for players of all ages and organise matches and tournaments within our county.
We comprise some 1500 members in 75 clubs, of which 14 are junior, affiliated to HBA (and BE). There are also some 80 coaches who coach individuals, in schools, clubs and our squads. Most, if not all our coaches, in spite of having spent their own time and money qualifying, spend some considerable amounts of their time coaching free of charge. This may be to help juniors, or adults, of all abilities, get started or to improve their game.
Vision
We believe that our sport is enjoyable but it can also help reduce ill-health caused by insufficient activity and improve social cohesion through playing with partners and in teams and clubs. The social cohesion can of course help reduce teenage antisocial behaviour.
Development
We have a development strategy which is progressed through the Badminton Herts Development Committee which comprises members of HSBA, Herts Badminton Development Officer, the Regional Development Manager of BE, a representative of Herts Schools Partnership, Schools Sport Development Managers, Herts District Sports Development Officers and us. The reports of this committee can be found on the appropriate page of our website.
The success of our development strategies is evident in the increase in numbers of people playing badminton in Herts and the year on year increases of club members for 12 years - and the numbers of our clubs.
All of the development, of course, costs money. For example, a racket or a tube of plastic shuttles for use in taster sessions in a school or sports centre costs about £6 and can be reused many times; a coach to go into school on a regular basis costs about £20/hour.
Some funding we are able to obtain from government funding streams but much of the development depends on voluntary contributions – in particular to our Voluntary Development Fund.
