Herts Senior County Championships 2017 – Results

One of the biggest events for some years and it was great to see so many young players looking to give the selectors some headaches! (plus a few oldies who seemed keen to do the same.)

Total entries 62: Women’s singles 6, men’s singles 18, women’s doubles 5 pairs, men’s doubles 16 pairs and mixed doubles 16 pairs.

Women’s singles

Leona Lee beat Molly Goode 21-16 21-19 in one semi final, to record a notable victory over someone 4 years older than her. In the other semi final, Abbie Smith defeated Adela Tunturovova 21-15 21-13.

In the final, a repeat of their group stage match, Abbie beat Leona 21-18 21-13 to take the title.

Men’s singles

Reigning champion Daniel Leers was beaten 21-17 18-21 21-18 by Daniel Davey in one semi final, whilst Zach Daniels beat Howard Stobo 21-8 21-17 in the other, to reach the final.

Zach went on to win the event, beating Daniel Davey 21-14 21-15.

Women’s doubles

The event was played as a single group of 5 pairs. Charlotte Willis & Cayleigh Bambrick were placed second, losing only to the group winners Molly Goode & Jo Goode, who retain this trophy for a 3rd consecutive season.

Men’s doubles

After some very tough competition in both the group stage and quarter finals, in the semi finals, Conor Bambrick & Dave Westwood defeated veterans Jon Austin & Don Burden 21-15 21-19, whilst in a more youthful battle, Daniel Leers & Daniel Davey beat Zach Daniels & Sam Newlove 11-21 21-17 21-18.

The final was a 21-19 21-16 victory for Conor & Dave.

Mixed Doubles

The event was a long and close affair, with eventual semi final victories for Jo Goode & Zach Daniels (over Katie Comras & Andy Walden by 12-21 21-14 21-19) and Charlotte Willis & Luke Jones (over Lia Willis & Daniel Davey, 18-21 21-14 21-16).

Charlotte & Luke took the trophy, as university commitments meant Zach had to leave without actually playing the final.

The event would not have been possible without the help of a number of people, Specifically, thanks to Bob Welsh and Melissa Davey who both helped throughout both days, plus Ed Lintott and Selectors Liz Austin, Andy Walden and Ben Vranjkovic.

We look forward to seeing you all next year.
